Have you recently bought a new home? Homeownership is easily one of the biggest milestones in someone’s life. But it doesn’t come easy. With the paperwork and moving into a new place, you often wonder why you ever thought this was a good idea. It’s not exactly cheap, either. However, if you are smart about it, there are plenty of ways to save money while shifting to a new home.
Read on as I discuss some house moving tips that can help you save money.
1. Declutter Your Home
Are you a bit of a packrat? If so, it would be a good idea to declutter your current home before you start packing your stuff up. I’m sure you have plenty of things that you have collected over the years that you have no use for anymore.
Getting rid of these items can make it easier and cheaper to move. You can give them to your friends or consider donating it to Goodwill or other charities. You can even have a garage sale and earn a little extra cash!
2. Choose the Right Moving Company
When you are moving, you often want to get things done quickly to get them out of the way. This can apply to a lot of things, but it certainly doesn’t apply when you are choosing a moving company.
Instead of going with the first moving company you come across, I recommend looking around a bit. You should get a minimum of three to four quotes before you select one for the job. According to the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA), you should choose movers that are a member of the AMSA.
You should also find out how many movers will be coming, the anticipated amount of time the move would take, and if they charge extra for sensitive items like expensive artwork.
3. Experiment with Packing Materials
If you are looking for house moving tips that can help save money, I suggest getting creative with packing materials. Packing materials don’t have to be limited to cardboard boxes, bubble wrap, and old newspapers. Instead, you can use things like towels, clothing, blankets, and soft furnishings to wrap and protect some items. They can double as packing material and help you save money.
You can also find out when the local grocery or liquor store gets deliveries and offer to pick up the leftover cardboard boxes. This can help you save a great deal of money.
4. Bring Expensive Fixtures With You
If you installed any expensive chandeliers and faucets in your current home, consider bringing them with you when you move to your new house. You can switch them out with more standard fixtures before selling your home.
Doing so allows you to save money on expensive upgrades to your new house. However, be sure you make all these changes before you list photos for selling your home. Potential buyers should know what they are getting to avoid problems in the future.
Wrapping It Up
As a real estate agent, I often recommend new homeowners to use these house moving tips. It makes the process a little easier and helps save money.
